Vermiculture Products

Composters.com provide the following:-

Vermicomposting is, without question, one of the most exciting and educational form of recycling known to modern humans. Here is a partial list of some of the benefits of worm composting:

  • Dispose of your food scraps without burdening the water treatment facility or landfills
  • Re-establish natural worm populations in your yard and garden that were decimated by poisoning from synthetic fertilizer applications
  • Provide your houseplants with free worm 'tea' (natural liquid fertilizer) and nutritious 'castings' (a great soil conditioner for gardens and indoor plants)
  • Ideal for apartment / condo dwellers or people with little or no yard space
  • Highly educational (and entertaining) for kids - teaches them about the carbon cycle and responsible waste disposal
  • Grow your own free worms for use as pet food or fishing bait.

 Other Important points:

  • General rule of thumb - 1 lb. of worms eats approx. 1/2 lb. of food scraps per day
  • Do not expose your worm bins to extreme temperatures.
  • Because of the presence of harmful pathogens in feces, the addition of pet wastes or biodegradable diapers to the worms bins is not recommended, unless the unit is specifically designed for or dedicated to animal feces
  • Redworms (also called Red Wrigglers) are hermaphroditic, and will produce an egg capsule every 14-21 days, each containing over 1 dozen babies
  • Composting worms love cool, damp and dark environs, and will breed optimally when these conditions are maintained. They will tolerate temperatures from 40 F to 80 F, but in northern climates they should be brought inside when the temperature falls below freezing.
  • You may use grass clippings, shredded cardboard or newspaper, and coir (coconut husks) as a source of bedding for your worm bins. Keep in mind that certain inks and dyes may alter the pH of your system.
  • Consider purchasing a small quantity of limestone to buffer the pH towards worm-favourable neutral levels and away from acidic conditions.

Down Under Worm Farm

Description

The affordable Worm Farm uses top feeding redworms to consume organic wastes derived from your food scraps, turning them into valuable worm castings - which may be then used in the garden as a soil conditioner. The worms live and breed in the top layer, while the liquid compost tea drains through the perforated base into the bottom container. This liquid may also be used on your plants. Made in Australia.

Live Composting Redworms & Nightcrawlers

Description

Composting Redworms - the tiny Eisenia foetida is capable of consuming up to its own weight daily in organic waste. The end result, referred to as worm castings or cow-free manure, is highly regarded as a soil amendment. During daylight hours, these worms continually tunnel in and feed on your food scraps, all the while aerating the bin. The finely ground digested matter is passed out of the worm's body in the form of rich, nutritious casts. Redworms tolerate a wide range of environmental conditions, which make them ideal for vermiculture.

European Night Crawlers - Eisenia hortensis has been traditionally used as bait for anglers, but it is also superior in vermiculture systems. It is over 2x as long as fetida, with an impressive girth. They prefer to feed in the deeper parts of the bin. The night crawlers will also benefit the compost bins replete with yard clippings as well as help aerate raised garden beds. If you worm bin has a liquid catchment tray at the base, make sure to regular empty the tea, so that any bottom feeding night crawlers that find there way into that area do not drown.

  • Expandable Worm Tower

Description

Worm composting is an incredibly efficient way to convert kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost for your garden. But sorting out the undigested scraps can be messy and inconvenient. The Expandable Worm Tower automatically separates food scraps from finished compost. Simply fill the bottom tray with red wriggler composting worms, bedding and food scraps. As these top feeding worms finish digesting, they will naturally seek more food and migrate upward into the tray above which has newly added goodies, leaving rich castings behind. By continually adding new food trays at the top, and emptying the bottom tray's vermicompost into the garden, you will insure a constant supply of castings. Pictured - 3 Tray System.

In full operation, the Worm Tower houses 10,000 to 12,000 worms, consumes 5 to 8 pounds of food a day, allowing you to harvest a full tray of castings per month. Each Worm Tower comes with full instructions and everything you need to get started (except worms and food scraps, of course). The Worm Tower is made in the U.S.A., constructed from high quality recycled plastic, with a limited 5 year warranty on materials and workmanship. It is very simple to assemble.

How It Works. The Worm Tower's self sorting upward migration system work like a charm. Worms are placed in a tray along with bedding (a combination of fiber and food). The second tray of bedding is placed on top of the first tray. As the worms finish digesting the food in the first tray, they naturally seek more, and migrate upward into the next tray. If you continue to add trays and feed the worms from the top, most of your worms will leave the bottom bin, which is then emptied into the garden and rotated to the top of your Worm Tower.

In a healthy worm bin, one pound of worms will consume one pound of food (50% kitchen scraps and 50% fiber) a day. In full operation, a 3-tray Worm Tower (pictured above) will house about 10,000 worms. They will consume 5 to 8 pounds of food a day, allowing you to harvest a full tray of castings per month. It will take around 6 to 9 months to reach this level. Each Worm Tower comes with detailed instructions and the basic ingredients needed to create a bed in which your redworms will flourish. Perpetual Outdoor Worm Shed ™

Description

The Outdoor Worm Shed has been used successfully outside the US for over 15 years. It is now being made in limited quantities in the state of Washington. Because it is crafted out of sustained yield cedar, it naturally repels unwanted insects and resists decay. It is very similar to the indoor Worm-A-Roo unit in that it utilizes the proven and patented migration control device, which is now corrosion resistant. This allows the worms to migrate back and forth between the two internal side bins, producing an everlasting vermiculture system and easily separated castings with no wet sludge, cranking or turning of handles. Detailed instruction manual included.
